Ralph Bowen Quintet - Soul Proprietor

February 28, 2002

On his first Criss Cross date since 1992, tenor sax master Ralph Bowen tackles the enspiriting organ-and-horns function with masterful aplomb, imparting clever reharmonizations and rythmic manipulations to the lingua franca that fire the creative juices of his top-shelf New York rhythm section, with Peter Bernstein on guitar, Hammond B3 organist Sam Yahel, the great Brian Blade on drums, and Philly trumpet master John Swana.

1. Invitation (Bronislaw Kaper)

5. Under A Cloud (Ralph Bowen)
6. The First Stone (Ralph Bowen)

You have a really great blog here. Thanks for the terrific album. I notice that some of the originals have familiar blowing changes, like: Soul Proprietor (Resolution by John Coltrane), Spikes (I Got Rhythm), and Meltdown (Countdown by Coltrane), but it sounds like you may already know that. Cheers (and stay thirsty, my friend)!

Nice album, I especially appreciated "Spikes", "The First Stone". All the players are impressive, great drummer, and Peter Bernstein is the greatest !

Thank you very much for sharing
