Miles Davis & Bill Laswell - Panthalassa

Is it a form of creative blasphemy to alter not only the sequence but the sound of masterworks past? In music, though, the ends quite often justify the means, and grandmaster-mixer Bill Laswell did an undeniably haunting job of reconstructing swatches of Miles Davis' amazing electric music for acid jazz-mutated ears in 1998. Of course, Laswell could claim some license to do so, for the original tracks themselves were subjected to creative editing by Teo Macero. Divided roughly into four sections, Panthalassa is a dark, continuous, hour-long, hronological tone poem of remixed electric Davis, from a 15-minute capsule of In a Silent Way through 16 minutes from the On the Corner sessions and finally nearly half an hour of selections from Get Up With It. Offered access to the original multi-track tapes, Laswell sometimes deletes the rhythm sections, brings up hidden instruments, adds Indian and electronic drones from elsewhere on the tapes, constructs moody transitions, and most tantalizingly, unearths passages from the sessions that were being released for the first time. Indeed, the On the Corner section yields two new titles to the Davis discography, the highly colored rock/funk "What If" and a sinister march-like "Agharta Prelude Dub." In the end, despite the altered sonic landscape, Laswell accurately evokes in turns the lonely, exquisitely gleaming, nightmarish, despairing moods that Davis was exploring prior to his 1975 retirement, a still much-misunderstood period whose music is far too disturbing and probing to deserve the sellout label.

Jacob Anderskov - Agnostic Revelations 2010

"Danish Pianist and Composer Jacob Anderskov has made more than 10 highly acclaimed albums as a Leader. After projects spanning from solo piano over miscellaneous duos, trios & quintets, and 3 albums with his infamous large ensemble Anderskov Accident, Jacob Anderskov has turned to the "classic" quartet format. Yet, this quartet album is everything but conservative. It is Anderskov at his best - visionary, spiritual, and surrounded by some of the leading musicians on the planet within the lingo spoken here."-Ilk Music

Anderskov says:

"I am very thrilled about this album. It contains 7 of my compositions plus a short collective setup improvisation, around one hour of music. It brings together different threads in my production in a way I have dreamed about for some time.

It draws upon the grand-scale music I have composed for a.o. Anderskov Accident & Copenhagen Art Ensemble, and yet has a spirit and a kind of awareness also found in my small groups and my solo work. I think that we basically hit a new way of approaching the quartet format, like I had envisioned. Plus, I think the album has a uniquely soothing vibe around it, just like we felt it while making it. The title [Agnostic Revelations] came to me a few weeks after the recording. It points to certain contemporary conditions of life ("agnostic" as in not believing, yet embracing the doubt), and at the same time, it savours the idea of the revelatory, quasi-religious experience that art can be."

Archie Shepp & Mal Waldron - Left Alone Revisited - A Tribute To Billie Holiday

A Tribute to Billie Holiday

Two “legends” of modern jazz meet for the first time in duo to pay homage to Billie Holiday!
“When Billie Died I found it very painful to play any tune associated with her. Always they would invoke unhappy and sad moments from our musical collaboration.
But now, for the first time with Archie, or maybe because of Archie, selecting the material and performing the songs became for me a joyous time in which I recalled many happy and positive moments togther with Billie.
Also re-establishing contact with Archie Shepp, who is one of the truly great saxophonists of our time, made the creation of this album a fantastically uplifting experience for me”.

Gary Burton - Quartet Live ( 2009 )

Originally getting back together for a festival gig in Montreal, vibraphonist Gary Burton and longtime colleagues guitarist Pat Metheny, electric bassist Steve Swallow were joined by drummer Antonio Sanchez. The musicians discovered that they were so inspired by the music that they decided to take it on the road for a tour. The selections included on this album were recorded at Yoshi's in Oakland, California in June of 2007. "Sea Journey" opens the album with a mysterious melody, and Metheny's guitar starts out with a gauzy sound, becoming more defined as his solo develops, then gives way to a melodic bass solo. "Olhos de Gato" has a milder and slower feel. Burton takes a patient solo, before Metheny plays some pointillistic guitar on this ballad. "Falling Grace" was one of the highlights of the album for me, opening with a stronger pace from the trio sans guitar, featuring Burton taking a nice, spritely solo. Metheny enters afterwards and keeps the spirits high with a pulsing solo backed by Sanchez's drums. Another highlight was "Walter L" also a fast paced song, featuring the full band playing with an energetic pop feel, Metheny developing a snarling guitar over Sanchez's rocking drums. "Missouri Uncompromised" opens rapidly with guitar and vibes harmonizing over fast drumming, before Metheny comes in fast and strong. But this track really belongs to Snachez who is killing throughout. Duke Ellington's beautiful ballad "Fleurette Africaine" slows the pace down with mellow vibraphone solos sandwiching a more intense guitar interlude. Metheny's composition "Question and Answer" ends the album with a lengthy performance starting with the understated theme, and a short round of solos before Metheny takes an intense solo which adds some subtle guitar synth to the mix, getting a little wild, before bringing the rest of the group back in and taking it out. One of the most enjoyable aspect of this music was the easygoing familiarity the musicians have with each other, they know that the support will be there so they can be creative and take chances. This keeps things fresh and the music is able to avoid the pitfalls of other "supergroup" recordings, as the egos are kept in check and the music flows freely.
